Have you got what it takes to be a care worker?
All sorts of people become care workers and find this a very rewarding profession. Less important than your work experience and education is the sort of person you are.
The level of care provided by care workers is what a member of the service user’s family would be expected to give. You won’t be required to undertake tasks that are normally done by a trained nurse.
You need to be:
- Caring (stating the obvious, maybe) but also able not to get too involved – you could be dealing with the sick and dying and must be able to cope with this
- Organised – you’ll have a lot to get through and will be expected to organise your time well
- Flexible – when you’re dealing with people, things can change at the last moment
- Sensitive to others’ needs – you’ll be helping to promote their mental wellbeing as well as meeting their physical needs
- A good communicator – no two service users are the same, they all need to be treated as individuals
- Not easily embarrassed – personal care involves helping people with the most intimate parts of their lives, and dealing with their mobility problems and physical disabilities including incontinence
- Willing to learn – on the job and able to achieve SVQ/NVQ level 2 in Social Care
If we haven’t put you off you can read about a typical day in the lives of a Home Care Worker and a Care Assistant at Seton Hall residential care home.
